How Many Air Purifiers Do I/You Need – ONE for EVERY Room?
You may wonder how many air purifiers I need when selecting an air cleaner, and if you need an air purifier for every room.
The quick answer is the number of air purifiers you need for your home or business depends on the indoor air volume (your room area) and the air purifier airflow (CADR).
And it is recommended to have an air purifier for each room, since multiple machines give you more flexibility in which room you want to move it to, while providing clean air wherever you are.
Today, I will provide the calculation on how many air purifiers do you need for your house, and which room you should place the air purifier, as well as the table on the number of air leaners for your quick decision.

#1. How Many Air Purifiers Do You Need for My House/Apartment
If you have a small room, like 10 X 10 ft2, 12 X 12 ft2, 15 X 15 ft2, you can simply get a small air purifier directly, and move the air cleaner for room to room.
For small rooms, such as your bedroom or kitchen, there is no need for you to buy multiple air purifiers. All you need to do is moving one to the room where you are.
If you don’t wanna move it, you can go get multiple air purifiers for different rooms in your home or apartment.
If your room is 500 ft2, 1,000 ft2, or even 2,000 ft2, 3000 ft2, only single one air purifier is not sufficient to clean the indoor air efficiently.
In such a circumstance, you should get several air purifiers, or a huge air purifier that can tackle such as big room.
The indoor air volume is generally equal to the volume of your room. For example, if your room length, width and height are 15 ft, 10 ft and 10 ft respectively, the volume is 15 X 10 X 10 = 1,500 ft3. So, the indoor air volume is 1,500 ft3.
For the best air cleaning efficiency, it is advised to clean the air at least twice per hour. It means, an air purifier needs to clean 1,500 ft3 X 2 = 3,000 ft3 per hour.
Formula on how many air purifiers should you have in your home:
The number of air purifiers = The indoor air volume to be cleaned per hour (ft3/h)/air purifier airflow (ft3/h)
Let’s assume the room coverage area is 215 ft2, and the height of the room is 10 ft. Thus the indoor air volume is 2,150 ft3, and we need to clean it 3 times per hour. It means that we need to clean 2,150 ft3 X 3 = 6,450 ft3/hour.
And we take Purivortex 201B HEPA air purifier as an example. Its airflow (CADR) is 1,660 ft3/hour.
The number of air purifier needed = 6,450 ft3/hour/(1,660 ft3/hour) = 3.8 ≈ 4
The calculation result means that to clean a 215 ft2 room 3 times per hour, you’ll need 4 Purivortex 201B Pro air cleaners.
In terms of Purivortex V1 with 4,238 ft3/h CADR, you only need 6,450/4,238 = 1.5 ≈ 2 items of Purivortex V1 air purifiers.
Check the below table for the overview on how many air purifiers does a home need.
#2. Table: How Many Air Purifiers Do You Need Based on Your Room Size

#4. Frequently Asked Questions on Your Home/Business Air Purifiers
If you have any question on how many or how big air purifiers you should have for your home and business, leave your questions in the comment below.
You may also share your insights in the comment.
Q1. Better to buy multiple small air purifiers for one large room or one large air purifier?
A1: Generally speaking, both options are OK for your clean air need. However, it depends on how big your room is.
If your room size surpasses the air purification efficiency or performance of the large air purifier, you shall get multiple air purifiers to clean your room.
Q2. Can I use one air purifier for my entire apartment?
A2: It depends on the room size of your apartment. If your apartment is small, you can simply get one air purifier for your entire apartment.
If you have a large apartment, it would be better to get multiple air cleaners to cover each room. Or, you can move one air purifier from room to room.
Q3. Can you have 2 air purifiers in one room?
Can you have two air purifiers working in one room together without interference?
A3: Sure you can. You can have as many air purifiers as you can in one room together.
However, in order to avoid unnecessary costs, you should determine the coverage area of your room, justifying better get two or more air purifiers.
Q4. Can an air purifier be too big for a room?
A4: The short answer is yes and no! Generally speaking, larger air purifiers mean better air cleaning efficiency. Thus, you may get a large air cleaner for your home.
However, if your room is just a small room, like a small bedroom with 100 sq. ft, it is unnecessary to get a huge tank air purifier to cover such a small room. In such a situation, a large air purifier can be too big for a room.
Q5. Do air purifiers work for whole house?
A5: Typically, air purifiers can filter the nearby or the whole-room air. Bigger air purifiers can filter large spaces.
Hence, do place an air purifier with the sufficient airflow (CADR) based on your room’s coverage area.
Q6. How many hours to use air purifier?
How many hours a day to run air purifiers? How often do you use air purifier?
A6: You can turn the air purifier continuously for 24/7 clean air. Or you can schedule the air cleaner turning on for certain hours when you are at home or sleeping.
Q7. How long does it take for an air purifier to clean a room?
A7: An air purifier is able to clean a room in about 20 minutes, which depends on the room area and the CADR of the air cleaner.
If you have a large room, it may take longer time for the air purifier to clean the room.
Thank you for the great information.
